The Swallow Reef or ( Malay ) Layang Layang is an atoll of the Spratly Islands whose rocks rise up to 3 m out of the sea. It is located off the northwest coast of the state of Sabah and is claimed by Malaysia .

geography

The reef has a total area of 10.4 km².

Like the other atolls of the Spratly Islands controlled by Malaysia, the Swallow Reef belongs to Daerah Kota Kinabalu .

The island in the Spratly conflict

Within the Spratly Islands conflict , the Swallow Reef is also claimed by several nations. Most recently, on March 5, 2009, the Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi landed on the Swallow Reef and Ardasier Reef in the southern Spratly Islands to claim the atolls as Malaysian territory.

The Malaysian military has had quite extensive facilities on the Swallow Reef since the 1980s, including a runway , a helipad , antenna systems, barracks and a control tower. In addition to the military part of the island, there are civilian facilities, including a hotel with a swimming pool.

Malaysia refers to the continental shelf argument (Shelf of Sabah and Sarawak) or the 200-mile zone in its legal claims. It claims a total of 12 southern Spratly Islands and currently holds six islands or reefs ( Ardasier Reef , Dallas Reef , Erica Reef , Investigator Shoal, Mariveles Reef and Swallow Reef). The legal claims are well secured by the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Malaysia has a modernly equipped navy (10 missile frigates ).

Diving

Layang Layang is a well-known diving center . The presence of the military for the past 30 years has effectively prevented the destruction of the reef and its wildlife. The only hotel on the island is, with the exception of the months November to January, when the island is closed to tourists , the starting point for diving enthusiasts from all over the world.
