Erich Gutenberg Vocational College (EGB) in Cologne is a vocational college with a focus on business and administration. It is named after Erich Gutenberg .

History and school profile

The ETUC was founded in 1965 at five locations in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine due to the rapidly growing need for training in the 1960s as a second commercial "vocational and trade school". In the first year the school had almost 2,000 students. When they moved into a new school building on August 1, 1969, the 2,150 students received modern rooms equipped with the latest technology.

Today, classes are held at two locations. At the main location in Cologne-Buchheim and a branch in Cologne-Stammheim .

The imparting of practical skills is the overarching goal of the ETUC that unites all courses. The focus is on promoting lifelong learning through vocational training with individual priorities.

Special offers and awards

SmartSchool

On the occasion of the education conference 2018 on March 19, 2018 in Berlin, the digital association Bitkom awarded the Erich-Gutenberg-Berufskolleg from Cologne as a Smart School.

Excerpt from the reason:

"This school combines digital infrastructure, digital learning content and pedagogical concepts in an outstanding way. The decision was made by a jury of education experts based on an extensive catalog of criteria.

The (16) awarded Smart Schools demonstrate that there are a large number of schools in Germany that have already embarked on the digital future with great ideas and concepts. Other schools can orientate themselves on this. "The aim is to give students across Germany the opportunity to attend a Smart School in the coming years," said Bitkom President Achim Berg.

Self-learning center

As part of the MÜLHEIM 2020 structural funding program, a self-learning center (SLZ) was set up at the EGB, in which 32 workstations as well as 40 tablets, an e-board, a whiteboard, an all-in-one touchscreen PC and a Pixel Sense table are available. The offer to use the self-learning center is available to secondary school students in the MÜLHEIM 2020 program area by arrangement.

Bring your own device (BYOD)

As part of the BYOD project at the ETUC, the use of student tablets in class has been tested since the 2013/2014 school year under the vision of "learning with any device, anytime, anywhere". For the 2014/2015 school year, ten vocational school classes (approx. 240 trainees) are organized as BYOD classes. Experience shows that not all students have the same devices. For this reason, the devices used in the project must be manufacturer-independent, ie the use of Apple iPads, Microsoft Surfaces and Samsung Androids is supported in the classroom. The cloud approach with Office 365 is used as a common communication platform.

Pänz to the PC (P @ P)

Under the motto "WWW is as important as the ABC - making children fit for the future", vocational students in the IT course at the ETUC have been introducing elementary school students to the world of personal computers in a mentoring program since 2000 and teaching them the possibilities of using modern media . This cooperation project, which is unique in Germany, won the 2006 honorary award of the city of Cologne in the special category schools.

Microsoft Mentor School and Showcase School

The ETUC has been a Microsoft Mentor School since 2013 as one of 80 schools worldwide and as the only state school in Germany. In the course of this program, particularly innovative schools are awarded. Since November 6, 2014, the ETUC has also been one of 75 schools worldwide, Microsoft Showcase School. In this initiative, "the best schools around the world that successfully integrate new media into everyday school life are brought together. Thus they take on the function of a" showcase ", as a reference for innovative learning methods and models and at the same time role models and supporters for other schools."

Virtual reality

With the city of Cologne, the EGB is currently implementing a pilot project on the subject of “future uses of augmented / virtual reality in schools”. The topic of augmented / virtual reality has tremendous potential for learning, which is also expressed accordingly in the “Education 4.0” educational initiative. The ETUC sees the need here to prepare schoolchildren and trainees in their school and professional training for the topic of virtual reality and to impart more than basic knowledge.

With the help of 3D glasses (the VR glasses Oculus-Rift, HTC-Vive and Sony-VR are currently in use), the EGB has succeeded in transporting the view from virtual rooms into the classroom. The use of virtual technology in the classroom enables a considerable increase in the acquisition of skills.

Exchange program "Fit for Europe"

The ETUC is involved in the two European programs Leonardo da Vinci (financial support for internships abroad) and Comenius (school partnerships). The aim here is to promote intercultural learning and develop foreign language skills. Projects and mutual visits with the partner schools in Lithuania, Ireland, Spain and Belgium are currently underway. Internships abroad were completed in countries such as Finland, Romania, France, Greece, Great Britain, Turkey and Poland. In addition, contacts to foreign companies for the placement of internships abroad are to be found or strengthened.

Support association

At the ETUC there is a sponsorship association that supports the school. The aim of the association is to support the educational tasks to be carried out by the school as well as to promote the pupils in their overall personality. This formal purpose of the statutes is fulfilled in particular through the provision of funds for different areas of the school - beyond the budget provided by the city of Cologne as the school authority - as well as the individual financial support of the students.

Former

Felix Höger, founder and former CEO of Pironet NDH AG, attended the IT training course at the EGB.
