Erich Bauer (entomologist)

Erich Bauer (born May 2, 1885 in Halle (Saale) , † June 4, 1972 in Goslar ) was a German lawyer and entomologist .

Life

From the winter semester of 1903 to 1907, Bauer studied law in Halle and Freiburg . Already interested in entomology as a pupil, he also attended scientific colleges. The subject was out of the question as a life profession because there was only one lecturer position in the entire German Empire (in Erlangen) and industrial pest control was still unknown. On October 5, 1904, he became a member of the Corps Palaiomarchia Halle . In particular, he devoted himself to the species of parasitic wasps and small butterflies . First descriptions of many species are due to him. He bequeathed his collection of over 60,000 insects in 275 glass cases to research institutes while he was still alive . The Ichneumonidae collection came to the Munich State Zoological Collection .

After his exams and legal clerkship in Halle, Bauer settled as a lawyer in Goslar in October 1914. He never applied for a notary's office because he wanted to use time for entomology. It was not until the post-war period that he took on a partner , the later Lord Mayor of Goslar Wilhelm Degenhardt . The attested him fairness and willingness to help, also in the defense of accused in denazification proceedings . Bauer ran his law firm for more than half a century and died at the age of 87.

His only son died in World War II .
