Erich Godly

Erich Gottgetreu (born July 31, 1903 in Chemnitz ; † November 13, 1981 in Jerusalem ) was a German-Israeli journalist .

Life

The son of a businessman completed an apprenticeship in the book and textile trade, was a member of the scouts and was already working as a freelance journalist in 1923. From 1925-26 he studied newspaper studies and theater studies at the University of Berlin without a degree and traveled to Europe, Egypt and Palestine in the following years . 1928-29 he was a reporter and deputy editor of the social democratic newspaper Lübecker Volksbote . There he trained Willy Brandt as a reporter and printed texts by the young Erich Kästner . 1930–1933 he was deputy editor at the Social Democratic Press Service in Berlin . He was also a member of the SPD and the Young Jewish Wandering Association .

In 1932 he published the NSDAP-critical novel Third Reich Secret in a magazine . That is why he was temporarily imprisoned after the handover of power to the National Socialists in 1933 and emigrated to Palestine. There he was an employee and correspondent for numerous newspapers and magazines. He provided texts for Klaus Mann's Die Sammlung , the Pariser Tageblatt , the Jüdische Weltrundschau and the Jüdische Wochenschau . 1940-1942 he was a correspondent for the Agence Française Indépendente of Charles de Gaulle , until 1947 also the Palestine correspondent of La Bourse Egyptienne in Cairo and the Journal d'Alexandrie in Alexandria. From 1942–1968 he was a correspondent and head of the Israel office of the Associated Press , then for Die Welt , Kölnische Rundschau , Die Rheinpfalz and the Berner Tagblatt.
