Erich Gritzner

Erich Gritzner (born April 7, 1874 in Berlin , † November 10, 1963 in Dresden ) was a German heraldist , genealogist and seal researcher .

He was the son of the heraldist Maximilian Gritzner . He attended high schools in Berlin and Steglitz . Then Gritzner studied in Leipzig and Berlin. During this time he also became a fraternity member . In 1901 he received his doctorate in Leipzig. phil. He then went on study trips to archives in Germany and Austria .

In 1903 Gritzner joined the Secret Main and State Archives and the Ernestine General Archives in Weimar as a research assistant . In 1907 and 1908 he was an archive assistant at the Lorraine District Archives . Afterwards he was appointed archivist of the Saxon Grand Ducal, based in Weimar. Between 1911 and 1920 he was an employee of the Saxon commission for aristocratic matters and finally became herald master in the Ministry of the Interior in Dresden . He also participated in the Saxon nobility policy in the 20th century. Gritzner was a member of a number of genealogical societies and history associations.

Since the turn of the century he emerged as an author of heraldic and sphragistic works.

The personal estate is looked after by the Saxon Main State Archives in Dresden .
