Erich Haag (born January 19, 1901 in Kirchheim unter Teck , † October 1, 1981 in Tübingen ) was a German high school teacher and classical philologist .

Live and act

After completing his school education in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren , Erich Haag studied classical philology and history at the universities of Berlin and Tübingen . Since the winter semester 1919/20 he was a member of the student association AV Igel Tübingen . In 1933 he completed his studies with a doctorate on Plato's Kratylos with Theodor Haering . After his legal clerkship , he took up a position as a teacher at the Uhland-Gymnasium in Tübingen . Interrupted only by being called up for military service in 1944, he worked there until his retirement. From 1948 to 1966 he was headmaster of the Uhland-Gymnasium and from 1956 to 1960 chairman of the German Classical Philology Association . On the occasion of his retirement in 1966 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.

During his school career and afterwards, Erich Haag always appeared as an advocate of the ancient languages, which in his opinion were an integral part of high school education. This attitude is clearly expressed in his 1962 book “The Latin in the Structure of General Higher Education” for the German Classical Philology Association and in his 1960 book “The Meaning of the Old Language High School in the Present” , which he wrote together with Eduard Spranger . There he describes the ancient philological education, for example, as a "blessing in the technical-industrial society of the 20th century".
