Erich Prieger (born October 2, 1849 in Kreuznach , † November 27, 1913 in Bonn ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Prieger was the son of the doctor Oskar Prieger (1820-1897). He worked in Bonn and Berlin and dealt in particular with Bach and Beethoven . Prieger is considered a student of Friedrich Kiel and was a co-founder and sponsor of the Beethoven House Association .

In 1897 he bought the Artaria autograph collection, which was up for sale and which contains numerous Beethoven manuscripts, for 200,000 marks and immediately left it to the Berlin State Library . When the German government approved the purchase four years later, Prieger generously waived the interest.

In 1905 he brought about the performance of Beethoven's opera Leonore in der Urgestalt (1805) in Berlin , which he had previously painstakingly reconstructed. Richard Strauss conducted the performance .

His residence, the Villa Prieger in today's Raiffeisenstrasse in Bonn, was completely renovated by Carl Richard Montag from 1996 to 1999 and is now the seat of the Montag Foundations.
