Life

Erich Schickling studied at the Munich Art Academy from 1947 to 1952 and was a master student of Josef Hillerbrand . In 1956 he won first prize in the ideas competition for the glass windows in the Elisabeth Church (Marburg) . This first competition opened the way for Erich Schickling for about 80 commissioned works for the design of glass windows and wall paintings in church and public buildings in Bavaria, Germany and Brazil. At the same time he created an extensive work of reverse glass pictures with themes from the Old and New Testament, pictures of mythical character, landscapes, still lifes with flowers and, in his later work, large-format paintings with themes from Greek mythology.

Erich Schickling worked with numerous architects, including Wilhelm Wichtendahl , Walter Schlegel (Switzerland) and Josef Naumann. The circle of artists and friends of Erich Schickling and today's Erich Schickling Foundation include Arthur Maximilian Miller , Eugen Biser , Julius Berger , Peter Lika , Hartmut Höll , Peter Härtling and Helmut Magg .

“It is important to me to illuminate the secret meaning that is inherent in us through painting. Again and again, glass is the medium that fascinates me, not to create images, but to become aware of everything in me and everything in the parable of the transcendent. "
