Erich Spengler
Erich Spengler (born May 27, 1886 in Znaim ; † March 14, 1962 in Vienna ) was an Austrian geologist .
Life
He grew up in Mährisch-Trübau, Prague and Vienna, where his father was a high school teacher. From 1905 he studied geology, palaeontology and mineralogy at the University of Vienna (with Viktor Uhlig , Franz Eduard Sueß , Franz Kossmat , Carl Diener and Friedrich Becke ). In 1909 he received his doctorate with a paleontological thesis (Nautilids and Belemnites from the Cretaceous South India). A mapping of the Schafberg group, on which he originally wanted to do his doctorate, turned out to be too extensive. Then he was assistant to Rudolf Hoernes and Vinzenz Hilber at the University of Graz, where he completed his habilitation in 1914. From 1915 to 1928 he was in the Geological Reichsanstalt, where he became chief geologist. In addition, from 1924 he was an associate professor in Vienna. In 1928 he became a full professor of geology at the German University in Prague, which he remained until his expulsion in 1945.
He was particularly concerned with the geology of the Northern Limestone Alps. He mapped there and dealt with tectonics, taking up the theory of the thrust nappa early on. He endeavored to reconstruct the extent of the original sedimentation space of the northern Alpine nappes by unwinding.
In 1956 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in 1952 an honorary member of the Geological Society in Vienna and he was a corresponding member of the Federal Geological Institute. He was a member of the Leopoldina .
