Erich Vogel grew up as a butcher's son in Zurich's industrial district. At the age of thirteen, he joined the Grasshopper Club Zurich , where he is said to have made it into the first team, although he was without a job there. He studied literature, sociology and theater in Zurich and Paris.
From 1973 until his release in March 1976, he and István Szabó coached the Grasshopper Club. In 1974 he was runner-up here. From April 1978 to October 1979, when he was replaced by the Yugoslav Lev Mantula after the 10th match day , he coached Neuchâtel Xamax FC, which was at risk of relegation at the time . From mid-1981 to the end of 1983 he was the coach of the Swiss U-21 national team .
He started out in sports management in 1986 at FC Aarau where he stayed until 1988. As head of sports at the GCZ from 1988 to 1999, he celebrated championship titles in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996 and 1998, as well as winning the cup in 1989, 1990 and 1994. They qualified for the Champions League twice . In 1996, the Swiss referee Kurt Röthlisberger made him an offer to bribe the Belarusian referee Vadim Zhuk and thus influence the outcome of the Champions League second leg against AJ Auxerre . Vogel brought this to the attention of UEFA , which led to Röthlisberger being suspended for life.
In 2000 he was head of sport at FC Basel and from 2001 to 2002 at FC Zurich . From 2007 to 2009 he was again at the Grasshopper Club Zurich, this time as Vice President and Head of Sports. He is regarded as the discoverer of many Swiss football talents and is said to have played a key role in the 2006 transfer of Raúl Bobadilla from CA River Plate to the second division club FC Concordia Basel .
Vogel was arrested in September 2014 and spent 20 days in custody. He was sentenced by the Zurich District Court to a conditional fine of 90 daily rates of 150 francs for assisting in attempted extortion because, together with player agent Peter Bozzetti , he put pressure on the then sports director of the BSC Young Boys , Fredy Bickel .
Vogel is widowed and lives in Uitikon Waldegg .
