Erich Walz

Erich Walz (born February 26, 1927 in Kirchheim unter Teck ; † September 17, 2011 in Ammerbuch ) was a German special educator , graphic artist and wood cutter .

life and work

Walz grew up in the Swabian Alb . From 1943 to 1945 he did military service, studied pedagogy in 1946/1947 and worked in general school service until 1959. After studying special education in 1951/1952, he worked as a special school teacher . From 1963 to 1973 he was the rector of the Lehenschule Stuttgart, a school for the disabled and training school for special needs teachers in Baden-Württemberg and Saarland.

Erich Walz trained himself to become a wood cutter. From 1957 to 1960 he was a guest at the Free Art School in Stuttgart. The focus of his artistic work was woodcut and wood printing . In 1968 he created his 42-part series Totentanz '68 . Working with Friedrich Hölderlin in the 1980s, he created several woodcut sequences and individual images of the poet's work. Walz was represented annually at the “Artists of the Stuttgart Neckar Locations” and in 1995 became a member of the German section of the “International Association for Artistic High Pressure XYLON ”. In the same year he self-published an overview of his works with 146 color and 153 black-and-white illustrations under the title " Auge & Messer ". His subjects were often biblical subjects.

Walz was married twice and lived and worked in Hausen am Tann . Since 1997 the community has provided him with rooms for his own gallery, in return the community received numerous works of art. He spent the last years of his life in a nursing home in the Tübingen district.

His works have been represented in solo exhibitions and exhibition participations, for example in 2002 and 2003 he took part in the traveling exhibition Interfaces - Woodcuts from Germany and France of the XYLON association in the Spendhaus in Reutlingen , which also in the Musée Pierre-Noël in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges as well has been shown in Japan and Israel.

After his death, his son continued the Erich Walz gallery in Hausen am Tann, and from the estate enabled greater access to the artist's work. The gallery had to close in 2016.
