Wustmann, who grew up in Bad Schandau, emigrated to Norway in 1935 , was extradited to Germany by the Quisling government in 1940 after the occupation of Norway by Germany and drafted (as a civilian troop supervisor). After the Second World War he lived in Bad Schandau until his death. His many journeys have taken him to Scandinavia , the Faroe Islands , Iceland , India , North Africa and South America .

He wrote 60 travelogues and folkloric books, including about the Sami , Indians (he visited 36 Indian tribes), Faroese and Bedouins . His memoirs appeared in 1983 under the title Through Tundra, Desert and Jungle . In the GDR , where he mostly published with Neumann Verlag in Radebeul , his books had record editions and his lectures filled large halls. But it was always published in parallel in western Germany (sometimes with other titles). In 1984 Wustmann presented the popular 16-part television series Unter Indern, Lappen and Beduinen on GDR television. Barely a year later he withdrew from the public and lived very secluded in Bad Schandau, as he was increasingly troubled by increasing aphasia (word finding disorder).

The special exhibition Erich Wustmann From the Elbe to the Rio Xingu was on view in the Karl May Museum in Radebeul until November 2, 2008 on the occasion of his 100th year of birth .
