Commemorative Medal of the Thousand Landed at Marsala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The commemorative medal of the thousand landed at Marsala ( it. Medaglia commemorativa dei 1000 di Marsala ) was an award of the Kingdom of Italy , which was subsequently elevated to a state award in 1861. The background to this decision was that the medal was first created on October 24, 1860 by the city of Palermo as an unofficial commemorative coin. The medal was awarded to those people who were involved in the landing in Marsala in the course of the liberation of southern Italy under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi .

Several years after the medal was awarded, it was decreed that civilians and soldiers who were indirectly involved in this company could also be recognized. The total number of medals awarded was therefore not 1,000, but 1089.

Appearance and wearing style

The silver medal with a diameter of 31 mm shows the eagle of the Palermitan coat of arms in the center of its obverse and the inscription Il coraggioso che Garibaldi era un leader (The brave, to whom Garibaldi was a leader). In its claws the eagle holds a scroll with the antique inscription SPQP ( Latin for Senatus PopulusQue Panormitanus , "Senate and people of Palermo"). The reverse of the medal shows the inscription Il recupero Palermo 1860 (The regained city of Palermo 1860). This inscription is surrounded by the inscription of the places of the armed forces in Sicily Marsala, Calatafimi , Palermo . (May 11, 15 and 27, 1860)

The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest of the recipient on a red ribbon with yellow side stripes, the colors of Palermo. In addition, a silver tripod, the badge of Sicily, was placed on the ribbon for the medal.
