Ermin von Lobbes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ermin (lat. Erminus; also Erwin) von Lobbes (* in Saint-Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt near Sissonne , France; † April 25, 737 in Lobbes , Belgium) was abbishop of Lobbes .

Ermin came from an elegant and wealthy Franconian family and was born in Herly (Ercliacum). (The village was later renamed in his honor and is now called Saint-Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt.) He studied at the cathedral school in Laon and was ordained a priest by the local bishop Madalgar / Madalgaire (around 682-713). He became Madalgar's chaplain and confessor and canon at Laon Cathedral.

In Laon he met Abbot Bishop Ursmar von Lobbes , who was later canonized , and this prompted Ermin to join the Benedictine Abbey of Lobbes near Charleroi as a monk . Ermin donated extensive land in the Laon area to the abbey; in a directory from 869 are named: Herly, Outre, Ramecourt, Ecorest-lez-Chèvres, Berrieux, Lierval and Juvincourt. At Herly, Ermin's birthplace, the monks from Lobbes established a priory , the name of which was later changed to Saint-Erme.

When Ursmar resigned from his offices as abbot and bishop for reasons of age and because of his poor health, Ermin was first his coadjutor , then his successor, at Urmar's suggestion . He was ordained bishop in 713 after Urmar's death and was Abbot Bishop of Lobbes for almost 25 years. He wrote a résumé of his teacher and predecessor, St. Ursmar.

After his death he was first buried in the Church of Our Lady of Lobbes Abbey. In 1409 his bones were transferred to the crypt of the collegiate church St. Ursmer in Lobbes. One of his successors as Abbot of Lobbes, Anson , wrote the story of the two Abbot Bishops Usmar and Ermin. Ermin is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church , and his feast day is April 25th. In art he is shown in an abbot's robe with a book.
