history

From the beginning until today

According to legend, the hermitage was built by Louis IX. (France) ( Louis the Saint ), who had a chapel built in the Forêt de Sénart to gather and perform his prayers here when he was hunting here. The first mention of the hermitage goes on church registers ( vicarage ) from the 13th century during the reign of Louis IX. back. It is listed as the prioratus de Dravello and belonged to the Abbey of Hiverneau, which, according to legend, was founded by Saint Louis in Lésigny . Hiverneau Abbey was abandoned in the 16th century. Other hermits subsequently took them, but these were driven out by the Archbishop of Paris in 1627 because of the prevailing disorder; the hermitage was now called Notre-Dame de Consolation .

The hermitage was given to the Camaldolese of the Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Yerres , not far from the Forêt, in 1695 . In 1710, the Viscomte de Noailles settled the hermits of Mont Valérien .

On May 22nd, 1739, the church was rebuilt by Anne-Charles-Frédéric de la Trémoille , as can be seen from the foundation stone opposite the building of the house of Nadar. The hermits at that time produced a fabric called Sénardine , derived from the name "Forêt de Sénart".

In 1794 the Hermitage was sold as a national property. The buildings were then used in various ways up to the point in time when private individuals - including Nadar - bought them in order to make their accommodation out of them from the second half of the 19th century. Part of it was converted into a restaurant. A "Hermitage Festival" attracted many people at the beginning of September.

Nadar

Entrance to the Nadar house

The photographer Nadar set up shop in a part of the former Hermitage in 1887, lengthening it on two sides and adding a floor. Here he set up his studio and received friends. He was ruined by the Paris Commune and moved to the Forêt de Sénart to take care of his wife, who was sick with plegia . Julia Daudet, Alphonse Daudet's wife , described the Hermitage as a "bizarre and funny house, with nooks and crannies, with strange doors and windows, with small additions". Nadar sold the property in 1894, moved away and set up a photo studio in the south.
