The Forêt de Sénart is a communal forest in the southeast of the Île de France , located between the departments of Seine-et-Marne and Essonne .

geography

nature

The forest area covers an area of about 3,000 hectares and extends from the extreme east of the Brie plain (region) to the valleys of the Seine et Yerres . Because of its clayey subsoil and the lack of elevations, there are around 800 ponds ; this makes the area particularly worth protecting.

Administrative structure

The forest area belongs to 14 municipalities ( Boussy-Saint-Antoine , Brunoy , Combs-la-Ville , Draveil , Épinay-sous-Sénart , Étiolles , Lieusaint (Seine-et-Marne) , Montgeron , Quincy-sous-Sénart , Saint- Germain-lès-Corbeil , Soisy-sur-Seine , Tigery , Vigneux-sur-Seine et Yerres ) and two departments (mainly to the departments of Essonne and Seine-et-Marne ). It is part of the Sénart forest that is mostly communal property (88% of its total area); there is also 5% private forest , 3% communal forest (Draveil, Soisy-sur-Seine, Montgeron, Quincy-sous-Sénart et Combs-la-Ville) and 1% other (regional) owners (Le Bois Chardon et la Fosse aux Carpes ). The forest gave its name to the new town of Sénart . It is made up of the communes of Combs-la-Ville, Lieusaint, Saint-Pierre-du-Perray et Tigery (and more recently Étiolles, Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil et Soisy-sur-Seine), as well as the community association Sénart Val de Seine ( Val de Seine ), to which the three municipalities of Draveil, Montgeron et Vigneux-sur-Seine have come together.

Flora and fauna

flora

The oaks are most common , including some centenarians, followed by chestnuts , hornbeams , birches , Scots pines and other conifers . Most of the conifers have been planted in forest fire areas .

The forest changed as a result of the storms in December 1999 and August 2000.

fauna

It is the common fauna found in the forests of the Île de France : wild boar , roe deer , foxes , hares , wild rabbits and squirrels . The bird species include field pigeons , snipes , ravens , ducks , crows , magpies and jays . Numerous amphibians , including some protected species, settle in the numerous pools of water .

In 2006, 15,000 Burunduks were counted, which were probably abandoned as pets from 1960 by their owners, who were overwhelmed by their stormy temperament. This species is under special observation because it can multiply undesirably ( Neobiota ); it is often infested by ticks and fleas and thus a potential carrier of Lyme disease .

history

There is an exhibition of sculptures in the Sénart Pheasantry Park

The forest of Sénart, in which the Druid cult was previously worshiped , is a relic of the old forest belt in the east of Paris. It is believed that the forest area stretched from Fontainebleau via Vincennes to Livry and Bondy in the 9th century .

Since it is only about 30 kilometers from Paris , it soon arouses the desire of the French kings . It became part of the royal domain of Philippe le Bel (1314) until the French Revolution . Saint Louis then founded the Ermitage de Notre-Dame-de-Consolation . For hobby reasons, Louis XVI. straight forest roads and star-shaped crossroads create to the Parforcejagd on Wolf and red deer permit. At the same time, extensive drainage work was ordered, of which Daniel's trench can still be seen today. Louis XVI then had the pheasantry built.

He later set up a "captain's post in the Sénart" for the benefit of his brother, the Count of Provence and future Louis XVIII. who had become the owner of Brunoy's castle . In 1789, a letter of complaint from the residents of Draveil demanded the repeal.

In the 17th and 19th centuries, the forest of Sénart was assigned to Paris by rafting on the Seine . Numerous charcoal burners lived in the forest and produced charcoal . In 1811, Eugène François Vidocq , head of the National Security Forces , attacked robbers on the road to Lieusaint in the Sénart forest.

The painter Eugène Delacroix and the writer Alphonse Daudet lived in Champrosay and were inspired by the landscape.

Even in the 20th century, the attraction of the Forêt de Sénart did not decrease: more than 3 million visitors were accepted each year.

Today the community forest is administered by the “Office national des forêts”. Today it is an area coveted by many that often pursue conflicting interests.

On July 26, 2006, a conflagration destroyed 90 hectares of forest in the area of the parishes of Brunoy and Montgeron . Mainly coniferous forest was affected by this, which is why this part has now closed to the public.

Protection regulations

With the decree of December 15, 1995, the Sénart area was declared a protective forest ; this is an area of 3,410.4267 hectares, of which 3,325,043 are in the department of Essonne (97.5%) and 85.3837 (2.5%).
