Ernest André (1838-1914)

Jacques-André Ernest (born 20th March 1838 in Beaune , Côte-d'Or department , died 5. April 1914 in Gray , Haute-Saône ) was a French notary and Hymenopterologe , the Hymenoptera , especially ants and velvet ants , has researched .

Life

Ernest André grew up with his younger brother Edmond André in Beaune. Already during his childhood he had contact with José Arias Teijeiro , a Carlist military and politician, who had been assigned to Beaune since 1839 after his flight into French exile. There Arias Teijeiro dealt with the natural sciences, especially entomology, and numismatics . In it he exerted a great influence on Ernest André.

After finishing school in Beaune, André studied law in Paris and completed an internship in a notary's office. In 1864, after completing his studies, he returned to Beaune and initially worked as an office worker. The following year he was appointed notary public in Gray. During his activity as a notary in Gray, which lasted until 1892, he was appointed President of the Chamber of Notaries several times. In addition, he held numerous local public offices and honorary offices.

In addition to entomology, André dealt with numismatics and built up an extensive collection of coins that had been in circulation in Bourgogne since antiquity . The collection contained some extremely rare coins. André was a member of several numismatic associations in France and abroad, including the Société francaise de numismatique, the Société suisse de numismatique (since 1880) and the Société royale de numismatique de Belqique. André repeatedly published articles in numismatic journals. Other of his collections included banknotes and bookplates, especially from the French colonies.

entomology

During his studies, André began to deal intensively with the natural sciences, in particular with entomology. He soon concentrated on hymenoptera , especially ants and ant wasps .

From 1882, with the publication of Species des Formicides d'Europe et des pays limitrophes , André was considered one of the world's most important myrmecologists. Together with his brother Edmond André he worked on the extensive work Species des hyménoptères d'Europe & d'Algérie on the European and Algerian hymenoptera. After Edmond's death in 1889, Ernest André was the sole editor. As part of his scientific work, André described more than 100 ants and ant wasps.

His estate included a collection of ants and ant wasps that had been built up over decades and was considered one of the most important in the world at the time. The collection was given to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in May 1914, at Andrés's request .

Ernest André had been a member of the Société entomologique de France since 1857 while still a student . His memberships in numerous other natural history and entomological associations included the German Entomological Society (since 1909), the Museum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, the Entomological Society of America (since 1897), the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (since 1884) and the Spanish Real Sociedad Española de Historia Natural (since 1899).
