Alfred Ernest Brown , CH , PC (* 27. August 1881 ; † 16th February 1962 ) was a British politician of the Liberal Party and the National Liberal Party , the 1923-1924 and again from 1927 to 1945 member of the House ( House of Commons ) and was minister in various departments from 1935 to 1945.

Life

Brown was a candidate of the Liberal Party in the elections of December 6, 1923 for the first time as a member of the lower house ( House of Commons ) selected and represented in this by 29 October 1927 constituency Rugby . In a by -election , he was re-elected to the House of Commons on March 23, 1927, in which he represented the Leith constituency until July 5, 1945 . In the first national government of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald he took over his first government office on November 10, 1931 and served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health until September 30, 1932 . After a government reshuffle he was from September 30, 1932 to June 7, 1935 State Secretary for Mining (Secretary for Mines) in the Ministry of Commerce ( Board of Trade ) . He was then in the second national government of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin , in the third national government and in the war government of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain between June 7, 1935 and May 10, 1940 Minister of Labor (Minister of Labor) . As such, he was on 7 June 1935, member of the Secret Privy Council ( Privy Council ) and served in the war Chamberlain government on September 3, 1939 to May 10, 1940 at the same time as minister of national service (Minister of National Service) .

As the successor to John Simon , Brown became chairman of the National Liberal Party in 1940 and held this position until 1940, when James Henderson-Stewart succeeded him. In the wartime government of Prime Minister Winston Churchill , he took over the office of Minister for Scotland (Secretary of State for Scotland) on May 10, 1940 , which he held until February 8, 1941. After a government reshuffle , he served as Minister of Health between February 8, 1941 and November 11, 1943 and, after another cabinet reshuffle, from November 11, 1943 to May 25, 1945 as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ( Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster ) . Most recently he held the office of Minister of Aircraft Production in the Churchill interim government between May 25 and July 5, 1945 . On August 17, 1945 he was also awarded the Order of the Companions of Honor (CH).
