Ernest Sosa

Ernest Sosa (born June 17, 1940 in Cárdenas , Cuba ) is one of the most influential contemporary philosophers who work on epistemological issues .

Sosa has been teaching philosophy at Rutgers University since January 2007 . He was previously at Brown University since 1964 and was a visiting professor at Rutgers from 1998–2006. He received his BA and MA from the University of Miami and his PhD in Pittsburgh. When he came to Brown University after that, he was particularly influenced by Roderick Chisholm . His son, David Sosa, is currently an Associate Professor in Texas, Austin. Ernest Sosa is President of the American Philosophical Association and editor of the journals Noûs and Philosophy and Phenomenological Research .

Sosa is not only one of the leading epistemologists, but has also worked on topics in metaphysics , modern philosophy and the philosophy of mind . Sosa is known to defend an epistemology based on virtues or values ​​(virtues). Value perspectivity distinguishes the knowledge of lower animals from the reflexive consciousness of humans.

Sosa has also taught as visiting professor at the University of Western Ontario , the University of Miami , Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México , Harvard University , the University of Michigan , the University of Texas at Austin, and the Universidad de Salamanca . He was also a visiting fellow at St. Catherines College, Oxford (Trinity, 1997), at the Australian National University in Canberra (2002) and at All Souls College , Oxford (Trinity, 2005).

In 2001 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
