Ernest von Stockalper

Ernest von Stockalper (born June 8, 1838 in Sion ; † May 1, 1919 there ) was a Swiss civil engineer.

From 1860 to 1863 he studied civil engineering at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum in Zurich .

During the construction of the Gotthard Tunnel , he was in charge of driving the north portal from 1872. From 1879 to 1888 he was the overall technical manager. Orders for mountain railways and hydraulic structures in Switzerland, France and Spain as well as other rail projects (including the Simplon tunnel ) followed.

From 1904 to 1917 he was on the SBB Board of Directors , and from 1912 to 1917 on the ETH Zurich School Board . An SBB RABDe 500 multiple unit is named after him.
