Ernestine Voss (born on 31 January 1756 as Marie Christine Ernestine Boie in Meldorf , died on 10. March 1834 in Heidelberg ) was the wife of Johann Heinrich Voss . Like her husband, she was literary; In addition, her numerous letters give a vivid picture of the life and environment of the Voss family.

Life

Ernestine was one of twelve children of the Meldorfer preacher and later provost of Flensburg , Johann Friedrich Boie. His family belonged to the Pretty Families , the Hanoverian upper class.

Her older brother Heinrich Christian Boie was well acquainted with Johann Heinrich Voss , whom she met in 1774 after a long correspondence. Due to Voss' financial situation, the marriage did not take place until July 15, 1777. The couple's acquaintances described married life as harmonious and idyllic; Ernestine's focus on her outstanding gardening, which made all the poet's stations bloom, was particularly noted. As the dormant pole of the marriage, Ernestine Voss mediated between acquaintances of the quick-tempered husband. For example, she established warm relationships with Charlotte von Schiller and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , whom the couple often received at home around 1803.

Five sons came from her marriage to Voss:

  • Friedrich Leopold Voss (* July 12, 1778 Wandsbeck, † October 25, 1782 Eutin)
  • Heinrich Voß (born October 29, 1779 Otterndorf, † October 20, 1822 Heidelberg) Professor of Philology in Heidelberg
  • Wilhelm Voss (born April 29, 1781 Otterndorf, † October 24, 1840 Eutin) doctor in Eutin
  • Hans Voss (born June 17, 1783 Eutin, † October 4, 1849 Freiburg) architect in Freiburg i. Br.
  • Abraham Voss (* February 12, 1785 Eutin, † November 13, 1847 Düsseldorf) classical philologist and pedagogue in Rudolstadt and Düsseldorf

After the death of her husband, she and her son Abraham published his letters in several volumes, along with information from his life, memorable essays and poems. Her memories of the Heidelberg pedagogue Emilie Heins appeared as a private print in 1831 . More essays and poems were published by her posthumously.
