Career

Club career

Ernesto Grillo, born in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires in 1929, began playing football with the CA Independiente club from Avellaneda , an industrial suburb of his hometown. In 1949 he was accepted into the club's professional team. At a time when the two big clubs from Avellaneda - Independiente and the Rivale Racing Club - were among the decisive teams in the championship race and were national champions for four years in a row from 1948 to 1951, Grillo matured to become a regular at Independiente. Between 1949 and 1957, the attacker played a total of 192 league games in the Primera División , in which he scored 90 goals for his club. A championship title did not jump out during this time. It was only after Ernesto Grillo's departure from Independiente Avellaneda that the club's first great era of success began, which culminated in the two triumphs in the Copa Libertadores in 1964 and 1965.

Ernesto Grillo left Independiente Avellaneda in the summer of 1957. He went to Europe in the Italian elite league Serie A and joined the top club there and reigning champions AC Milan . In doing so, Grillo followed a trend that in the late 1950s brought a whole series of South American players, including his compatriot Omar Sívori , the Brazilian José Altafini or Uruguay's 1950s world champion Juan Schiaffino , to Italy's financially strong top clubs in Milan and Turin . Ernesto Grillo was also able to assert himself in the AC Milan team, which was made up of exceptional talent such as Altafini, Nils Liedholm or Cesare Maldini , and became a regular in the attack of the Milanese. After a relatively weak first season with only ninth place at the end of all game days, the team of coach Giuseppe Viani succeeded in winning the Serie A 1958/59 title by taking first place with three points ahead of Fiorentina . Two years earlier they had already reached the final of the national championship cup - as the reigning champion for the European Cup of National Champions 1957/58 - and met the famous White Ballet of Real Madrid there . After it had been 2: 2 after the end of regular time - Ernesto Grillo scored 2: 1 for Milan in the 77th minute - Milan were only defeated by a goal by Francisco Gento in the 107th minute with 2: 3.

In 1960 Ernesto Grillo's time at AC Milan ended, he went back to his home in Argentina and again had a very successful time with Boca Juniors . In 1962, 1964 and 1965 the Argentine championship could be won three times. In addition, they reached the final in the Copa Campeones de América 1963 and only failed there with 2: 3 and 1: 2 at the great FC Santos for Pelé . Ultimately, Ernesto Grillo played from 1960 to 1966 for the Boca Juniors and came to 88 league games during this time, where he got eleven goals. After the end of the 1966 season, Grillo ended his footballing career at the age of 37.

National team

Overall, Ernesto Grillo made 21 appearances in the jersey of the Argentine national football team between 1952 and 1958 . He got eight hits. Apart from participating in the 1955 Campeonato Sudamericano in Chile , which they also won, the attacker was denied major tournaments such as a soccer world championship . He also missed the 1958 world tournament in Sweden because at the time it was not welcome to play as an Argentine in Europe, in which case you simply had little chance of playing for the national team.
