Ernst (Anhalt)

Ernst von Anhalt (* 1454 ; † June 12, 1516 in Dessau ) was a Prince of Anhalt-Dessau .

Life

Ernst was a son of Prince Georg I von Anhalt-Zerbst (1390–1474) from his fourth marriage to Anna († 1513), daughter of Count Albrecht von Lindau-Ruppin.

In 1470 Ernst's father had placed the government in the hands of his sons, who divided the country in 1471. Ernst and Sigismund III. received Anhalt-Dessau, Georg and Waldemar VI. got Anhalt-Koethen and Rudolf should be settled with a sum of money. The part of the state of Anhalt-Bernburg , which fell to the house in 1468, was to be governed by all brothers together.

Ernst outlived all of his brothers. As a prince he promoted agriculture and achieved, together with clearing, a considerable increase in population. The Marienkirche in Dessau was completed in 1512 , for which Ernst laid the foundation stone in 1506. In 1512, Ernst built the mill and several outbuildings in Dessau Castle . He received the debt payment from Brandenburg for the pledged Cottbus and Peitz and in 1515 issued church regulations.

Marriage and offspring

Ernst married Margarethe (1473–1530), daughter of Duke Heinrich the Elder of Münsterberg , on January 20, 1494 in Cottbus . His wife was considered an excellent housekeeper and the wedding was celebrated very sparingly. After Ernst's death Margarethe took over the reign of the underage sons. Ernst had the following children from his marriage:
