Ernst August Lauter

Ernst August Lauter (born December 1, 1920 in Rostock ; † October 21, 1984 in Berlin ) was a German physicist specializing in solar-terrestrial physics and geophysics .

Life

Professor Dr. rer. nat. Ernst August Lauter had been director of the observatory for ionospheric research of the Meteorological Service since 1951 and became professor for physics of the atmosphere at the University of Rostock in 1957 . From 1966 to 1969 and 1972 to 1976 he was director of the Central Institute for Solar Terrestrial Physics of the German Academy of Sciences . Wilfried Schröder has published extracts from the correspondence between Professor Hans Ertel and Professor Ernst-August Lauter in "Contributions to the History of Geophysics and Cosmic Physics", published in 2008. Lauter, in his capacity as Secretary General, sought close contact with Ertel, who was his teacher and the development of the research area cosmic physics at the academy designed with this. Ertel was a key part of Lauter's discussion, and Lauter sought his help again and again. In addition, Lauter was appointed to the editorial team of "Gerland's Contributions to Geophysics" by Professor Ertel. Both together published the "Zeitschrift für Meteorologie".

From 1964 he was a member and from 1968 to 1972 Secretary General of the German Academy of Sciences. In 1968 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR, 2nd class. He was a holder of the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1970 he received the Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences .

His ashes were buried in Rostock, Neuer Friedhof.
