Ernst August Wilhelm Himly

Ernst August Wilhelm Himly (born December 14, 1800 in Braunschweig , † February 16, 1881 in Göttingen ) was a professor of medicine at the University of Göttingen.

Life

Himly was born the son of the ophthalmologist Karl Gustav Himly (1772–1837) and was the older brother of the chemist August Friedrich Karl Himly (1811–1885). He attended high schools in Holzminden and Göttingen.

From November 1813, Himly studied medicine at the Georg-August University in Göttingen ; his father was the university's prorector at the time. Himly obtained his doctorate there in 1823 . After scientific journeys that took him through Germany and for almost a year to France , he also studied in the anatomical collections in London , Edinburgh , Dublin and finally returned to Göttingen through the Netherlands . In Paris he mainly heard clinical lectures by René Laënnec and Guillaume Dupuytren and physiological experiments by François Magendie . After his return he completed his habilitation in Göttingen in 1825 for physiology , comparative anatomy and forensic medicine . Until he was appointed associate professor in 1832, he worked as a private lecturer. In addition to medical publications and the posthumous publication of his father's textbook, he also translated travel reports from English. He died on February 16, 1881 in Göttingen.

Teaching

His public lectures focused on comparative anatomy, the physiology of respiratory tools, the physiology of humans and animals, and forensic medicine. One of his students was Matthias Jacob Schleiden .
