Ernst Brand (born January 2, 1827 in Feuchtwangen , † March 7, 1897 in Stettin ) was a German general practitioner . He developed and described the hydrotherapy of typhoid .

Life

Wilfried Ernst Brand was born the ninth of eleven children of the District Court Assessor Peter Anton Brand from Neunstetten and the Magaretha Barbara Mend from Markt Nordheim . Brand studied from 1845 to 1851 at the University of Erlangen , where he received his doctorate in 1851. In 1849 Brand was still a clinical assistant to the doctor Carl Friedrich Canstatt , who died in 1850.

After the Prussian state examination he settled in Stettin and married Elisabetha Maria Sophia Waldermann here in 1853, the only daughter of a royal Prussian government councilor, with whom he had four children until 1862. In addition to his work as a general practitioner, Brand went public with a series of epidemiological works. His work on the treatment of typhus with cold water cures was of particular importance . This method was used in Szczecin and elsewhere, especially in typhoid epidemics in the military. A hydrotherapy institute he founded in Stettin only existed for ten years.

In 1864 Brand was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . Brand died as a secret medical councilor in Stettin.
