Ernst Carl Christian John (* 1788 in Arnstadt ; † 1856 ) was a Prussian editor, councilor and chief censor.

Life

Carl John had studied at the University of Jena . One of his fellow students was August von Goethe . Towards the end of the French era , after completing his law degree, Carl John found no vacancy in the civil service either in Saxony or in Prussia . Out of necessity he was recommended by his friend August "because of his beautiful handwriting and excellent knowledge of old and new languages" in Weimar and so in March 1812 he became Goethe's secretary. Carl John lived in the house on Frauenplan ; was usually always ready to dictate Goethe. Goethe, who missed almost nothing in his house, attests: "He knew how to hide secret vices, inclination to drink, play and so on."

Carl John accompanied Goethe to Teplitz in 1813 .

In 1814 Carl John switched to the civil service in Saxony and Prussia. In Berlin he became newspaper editor in 1823 and senior censor in 1831. Carl John monitored Heinrich Heine and others in " Junge Deutschland " until censorship was abolished in 1848 .
