Ernst Cordell

Ernst Cordell (born February 13, 1900 in Recklinghausen , † October 18, 1971 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German engineer. As chief construction director, he was head of the Freiburg gas and waterworks.

Career

Cordell studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover between 1920 and 1924 , which he completed with the main diploma examination. He then worked for two years at a coking plant based in the Ruhr area in the development, assembly and commissioning of by-product plants. From 1926 he was employed by the gas and water works of the city of Eisenach, where he was responsible for the planning and construction management of a new gas works and a medium-pressure gas supply. In autumn 1929 he joined the gas and water works of the city of Freiburg i. Br., Who remained his professional home until his retirement. He moved to the city of Freiburg on October 1, 1934. Initially he lived at Schenkendorffstrasse 1 and from October 1945 in Vierlinden 7. He was married to Maria Cordell, nee Dionysius.

He initially dealt with the construction of a new gas works in Mooswald and the construction of medium and high pressure gas lines. The Zartener basin was expanded to supply the city with water, new deep wells were developed and a drainage gallery was created. In April 1937 he was appointed head of the municipal gas and water works and the technical management of Gasfernversorgung Oberbaden GmbH. By 1954 he expanded the Freiburg gas supply system to an output of 100,000 m³ per day. In 1956, a hydrocarbon gas system with oil carburization with a daily output of 80,000 m³ was added. For the water supply, the supply lines were gradually expanded, large water protection areas developed and, from 1962, the construction of a new waterworks near Hausen an der Möhlin .

After the end of the Second World War, Cordell was commissioned by the French military authorities to rebuild the gas supply in southern Baden . On his initiative, the Baden Gas and Water Works Association was founded in 1947 and he was elected its first chairman. He was a member of the board of the German Gas and Water Works Association (VGW), a member of the Advisory Board of the Economic Association of German Gas Works AG (WV) and a member of the board of the Baden-Württemberg state associations of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) and the German Association of Gas and Water Industries (DVGW). He was also a member of the supervisory board and technical committee of the Gas Supply South Germany (GVS).
