As a player

Bundesliga

The defensive player, who came to the youth division of the Palatinate Bundesliga club from TSV Etschberg in 1965, played in the Bundesliga exclusively for 1. FC Kaiserslautern . On November 4, 1967, he made his debut in the home game against MSV Duisburg, which 1. FCK lost with the defensive formation Wolfgang Schnarr (goalkeeper), Herward Koppenhöfer , Dietmar Schwager , Diehl (Vorstopper) and Uwe Klimaschefski with 0-1. In his first Bundesliga round in 1967/68 he came to 14 missions under the coaches Otto Knefler and Egon Piechaczek (from March 5, 1968). The Betzenberg-Elf could just achieve relegation in 16th place. In his second season, 1968/69, the young player was a member of the first team with 33 league games, which in turn only barely escaped relegation. Then it got better under the coaches Gyula Lóránt , Dietrich Weise and from 1973 Erich Ribbeck , the Lauterer qualified in the rounds of 1971/72 and 1975/76 each with seventh places for the UEFA Cup . The games against Stoke City, CUF Barreiro, Ararat Erewan, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Famagusta and Feyenoord Rotterdam were outstanding experiences in the career of the consistent and reliable pre-stopper. In his last season, 1977/78, he had teammates Ronnie Hellström , Jürgen Groh , Werner Melzer , Hans-Peter Briegel and in attack striker Klaus Toppmöller (34 games - 21 goals) by his side. After the 1977/78 round he was declared a sports disabled person and he began his coaching work in the youth department of the Lauterer. Ernst Diehl was a consistent defender who played at a good level for years, but there were some outstanding pre-stoppers during this time, especially Georg Schwarzenbeck , Willi Schulz , Horst-Dieter Höttges , Wolfgang Weber and Rolf Rüssmann , which meant that he was not used in the national team came.

DFB Cup

The highlights of his playing career were certainly the two DFB Cup finals in 1972 and 1976. On July 1, 1972, 1. FC Kaiserslautern had no chance against a great Schalke team. With 0: 5 goals, the Palatinate lost this final. On June 26th 1976 there was the next chance to get the trophy in the Palatinate. The opponent in the final was Hamburger SV . Here the course of the game was far more even and Lautern was a serious opponent of the Hanseatic League. Nevertheless, this game was also lost 2-0. In 1977 HSV won the European Cup Winners' Cup .

Trainer

After the end of his active career, he coached the A-youth and the amateurs of 1. FC Kaiserslautern and was twice interim coach of the Bundesliga team in 1983. In 1992 he won the German championship with the A-Juniors with a 5-1 win against 1. FC Köln . In 1991 and 1993 he lost the finals with the FCK Juniors against VfB Stuttgart and FC Augsburg. From 1996 to 1997 he was Otto Rehhagel's assistant coach with the professionals, after which he worked again in the youth division of the FCK.
