Ernst Flechsig

Ernst Flechsig (born October 5, 1852 in Elster , † October 11, 1890 in Bad Elster ) was a German chemist and chess master .

Life

Flechsig was born the son of a doctor. He attended the humanistic Thomas School in Leipzig .

From 1874 he studied chemistry and natural sciences at the University of Leipzig . In 1878 he was at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg to the Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as an assistant at the Animal Chemical Institute of the Agricultural Academy in Proskau and from 1887 at the Animal Chemical Institute at the University of Breslau . He then became an employee of the Portland cement factory in Westphalia. Then he became a chemist in the sole leather factory of the Knoch family in Hirschberg (Saale) .

As a chess player he took second place behind Wilfried Paulsen at the 10th Congress of the West German Chess Federation in Düsseldorf in 1876 , 10th place at the 3rd Congress of the Central German Chess Federation (winner: Louis Paulsen ) and in 1879 the 8th place at the 1st Congress of the DSB (winner: Berthold English ). Against Fritz Riemann , he played a match in Breslau in 1885 that ended in a draw (5: 5). His best historical rating was 2544 (February 1886). In January 1880 he took 20th place in the subsequently calculated world chess rankings.

Flechsig fell ill with pleurisy and died in 1890 at his parents' house in Bad Elster.
