Ernst Friedemann von Selmnitz (born April 28, 1620 in Steinburg , † April 13, 1678 in Straussfurt ) was an electoral Saxon Privy Councilor , chamberlain and superintendent of the Mansfeld county and manor owner in Steinburg, Straussfurt, Vehra and Kranichborn .

Life

He came from the Thuringian noble family von Selmnitz and was the son of Rittmeister Friedemann von Selmnitz and his wife Sophia Maria née von Miltitz from the Steinburg family. The name Friedemann was one of the leading names of the sex.

The father died before his fourth birthday, so that he was taught mainly by preceptors. Together with his brother Philipp Ernst von Selmnitz, he went to the University of Leipzig to study philosophy at the age of ten. However, his mother and Miltitz's grandfather called the two brothers back and had them trained by private tutors. From 1634 to 1636 he was on a study tour at the University of Strasbourg . He then stayed in Geneva for some time and continued his educational journey through several stops to Paris . The death of his mother made it necessary to return to Thuringia in the autumn of 1638. In the following year he lost his brother and sister, so that he now had to take care of the entire inherited parental property. He received reinforcement in the housekeeping in 1645 through the marriage of the daughter of the Privy Councilor Georg von Werthern at Beichlingen Castle . The marriage produced five sons and six daughters.

In 1651, Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony gave him the captaincy of the Sangerhausen office . After the office of Sangerhausen fell to the Principality of Saxony-Weissenfels , he became supervisor of the county of Mansfeld in 1657 and chamberlain of the Electorate of Saxony in 1658. In 1677 he was given the title of Privy Councilor. In the following year he died as a feudal lord, court lord and heir on Straussfurt, Vehra, Steinburg and Kranichborn.

On May 8, 1678, his body was buried in the hereditary funeral after noble use and on September 12, 1678 a funeral service was celebrated for him in the church in Straussfurt. The funeral sermon given there by the Straussfurt Pastor Zacharias Zinckeisen was published by the Electoral Mainz printer Johann Bernhard Michael in Erfurt.
