history

In 1233 a Heinrich von Kranichborn was mentioned in a document. The place belonged as an exclave to the administrative office of Weißensee . Through the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna , he came to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in 1815 and was assigned to the office of Großrudestedt in 1816. With the dissolution of the office, the place came to the Weimar administrative district in 1850 , to which it belonged until 1920.

Kranichborn was a manor village. Both the manor house, which was restored into a village community center in 2010, and farm buildings are available. Until 1945 the estate belonged to the Tümmler family, who were expropriated without compensation. In the churchyard there are historical gravestones, including those of former landowners. In 1913 a memorial stone was placed under a huge oak tree (natural monument) in the village center in the form of a Waidmühlstein to commemorate the successful battles against Napoleon with the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. In April 1945, US troops entered the village and were relieved by the Red Army in early July . A radio technology company of the NVA was stationed on the Kranichborn hill (204 m) from 1961 . This FuTK-511 was relocated to Sprötau in 1975 . In 1964 the facility near Kranichborn played a role in tracking a US reconnaissance aircraft that had flown in and was then shot down by Soviet fighters near Vogelsberg .

Attractions

The former manor house of the manor from the 18th century housed a mayor's room, consumption and nurses' station during the GDR era. As part of a project “renovation and conversion of the former manor house into a village community center”, the building was given a new facade. In 2011 the interior was designed according to its intended purpose.

The former air surveillance system of the NVA on the Kranichborner Hügel is fenced (2011), is partly used peacefully, but is largely neglected with the remains of ruinous military buildings. There is a radio mast on the site.
