Ernst Maurits Henricus Hirsch Ballin (born December 15, 1950 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch politician and lawyer . From September 22, 2006 to October 14, 2010 he was Minister of Justice of the Netherlands , a position he had already held from 1989 to 1994 under Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers . Hirsch Ballin is a member of the Christian Democratic Party Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA).

Life

His mother, Maria Koppe, came from a Roman Catholic family. His father, the lawyer Ernst Hirsch Ballin Denny was Jew and fled before the Second World War from Germany to the Netherlands, where he went into hiding, and so survived the war.

Ernst Hirsch Ballin studied law at the University of Amsterdam and has been a Catholic since then. At the same university he received his doctorate in 1979. From 1981 to 1989 he was a lecturer for Heads of State and Administrative Law at the Catholic University of Brabant, now the University of Tilburg . In 1989, Hirsch Ballin for the CDA as justice minister in the Cabinet Lubbers III one. After the death of the then Interior Minister Ien Dales on January 10, 1994, he also temporarily took over this office until a successor was sworn in on January 18.

In the final phase of the legislative period, Hirsch Ballin had to resign after the elections for the second chamber of the Dutch parliament in May 1994 after a political affair. His former State Secretary Aad Kosto was his successor until the new cabinet was sworn in. He then worked again at Tilburg University from 1994 to 2006, but this time primarily in the field of international law . Hirsch Ballin had also been a member of the Raad van State of the Netherlands from 2000 until he succeeded Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner, who resigned on September 22, 2006, in the Balkenende III cabinet . On December 13 of the same year he temporarily took over responsibility for foreigner issues from the outgoing Minister Rita Verdonk .

Ernst Hirsch Ballin was again represented as Minister of Justice in the Balkenende IV cabinet, which was in office from 2007 to 2010 .
