Ernst III. (IV.) Von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen-Herzberg (* December 17, 1518 in Osterode am Harz ; † April 2, 1567 at Schloss Herzberg in Herzberg ) was Duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen from the noble family of the Welfs .

Life

Ernst was the eldest son of Duke Philip I of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen (1476–1551) and his second wife Katharina von Mansfeld-Vorderort (1501–1535), the eldest daughter of Count Ernst II and his first wife Barbara von Querfurt. His paternal grandparents were Duke Albrecht II of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen and his wife Elisabeth von Waldeck .

Together with his father and brothers, he took part in a campaign in the Schmalkaldic War in southern Germany in 1546 , which ended unsuccessfully before Ingolstadt .

Marriage and offspring

On October 9, 1547, Duke Ernst III married. in Wolgast the Princess Margarethe von Pommern-Wolgast (1518–1569), eldest daughter of Duke Georg I and his first wife Princess Amalie von der Pfalz . Only one daughter from the marriage reached adulthood:

The successor to Duke Ernst III. his younger brother Wolfgang took over . When he also died in 1595 without male descendants, Ernst's other brother Philip II followed. With his childless death the following year, the Grubenhagen line of the Guelphs died out.
