Ernst Karl Weber

Ernst Karl Weber (born October 22, 1880 in Zurich ; † July 13, 1973 there ), reformed , resident in Zurich since 1901, was a Swiss astronomer and cartographer .

Life

Ernst Karl Weber had Saxon ancestors, his father was Heinrich Friedrich Weber . After graduating in 1899, he completed a degree in civil engineering at the ETH Zurich , which he completed in 1904 with the academic degree of Dipl.-Ing. completed. Weber subsequently held an assistant position at the Swiss Federal Observatory there , and later worked as part of preliminary studies for the construction of the Mont-Blanc railway.

In 1908 Ernst Karl Weber switched to the Russian main observatory in Pulkowo near St. Petersburg as a volunteer . In 1909 and 1910 he took part in an expedition on behalf of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences to measure and map the approximately 6000 km long East Siberian Arctic Coast. His work formed the basis for the first reliable maps of the coastal areas there.

After surveying work in Southeast Asia , Australia and Romania , Ernst Karl Weber held professorships in geodesy from 1934 to 1951 at various universities in Istanbul and later in Baghdad . In 1957 he returned to Switzerland. Ernst Karl Weber, who was married twice, died in 1973 at the age of 93 in his hometown of Zurich.

A cape south of Wrangel Island was named after Ernst Karl Weber .
