Ernst Friedrich Carl Christian Klatte (born June 18, 1774 in Breslau ; † 1837 in Bonn ) was a Prussian cavalryman and writer on hippology .

Life

From 1802 Klatte was demonstrably stable master with several Prussian regiments, first with Dragoon Regiment No. 2 "von Prittwitz" , from 1803 with Hussar Regiment No. 6 "von der Oye" . After the battle of Jena and Auerstedt , he resigned from the regiment. In 1810 he was employed as a stable master in Vienna by Prince Esterházy , which he left again to take part as an officer in the train of the Prussian cavalry at the end of the wars of liberation from 1815 . After the war he became a teacher with the cavalry training squadron with the rank of prime lieutenant . For unknown reasons, this career ended abruptly, and Klatte was transferred to Bonn as stable master of the newly founded Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität , where he died in 1837 as a well-off man.

Klatte's first book on horse keeping, Heniastik, or the art of bridling horses, appeared as early as 1798, followed by numerous others that made Klatte one of the most respected hippologists in German-speaking countries. He invented various new dressage instruments and also devoted himself to the psychology of horses. He is said to have been one of the first to demand the introduction of tests in horse breeding. He was also the translator and editor of the 1777 work La science et l'art de l'équitation ... by the French Louis-Charles Mercier Dupaty de Clam .
