Wolfgang Moritz von Prittwitz (born July 8, 1731 in Gut Polish Ellguth, Oels district ; † July 27, 1812 in Lüben ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He came from the old, very widely branched Silesian noble family von Prittwitz and was the son of the ducal Württemberg- Oelsnischen district administrator Balthasar Moritz von Prittwitz (1695–1764), landlord in Polish Ellguth, and his second wife Helene Charlotte, née von Siegroth (1710–1764) 1784).

Military career

In 1747 Prittwitz joined the cuirassier regiment "von Rochow" of the Prussian army as an Estandartenjunker . First as a cornet , later as a second lieutenant , he took part in the battles of Lobositz , Prague , Kolin , Roßbach , Leuthen , Zorndorf , Liegnitz and Torgau as well as the sieges of Prague , Breslau , Dresden and Schweidnitz during the Seven Years' War in 1756/63 . By July 1774 Prittwitz had advanced to major . After the War of the Bavarian Succession , he rose to regimental commander on July 25, 1784. In this capacity Prittwitz was 1,784 in September lieutenant colonel and in May 1787 , Colonel . In addition, he worked on a voluntary basis as President of the Protestant church and school authorities. On the occasion of a review , King Friedrich Wilhelm II awarded him the order Pour le Mérite on September 11, 1787 .

In May 1792 Prittwitz was promoted to major general and shortly thereafter appointed chief of the "von Gilsa" dragoon regiment . He led this in 1794/95 during the campaign in Poland in the battles near Petrikau and Rawa . In January 1797 he gave his regiment to Hans von Strantz and received from the king the "von Schmettau" dragoon regiment in Lüben. On May 21, 1798 Prittwitz was awarded Lieutenant General and two years later with the Order of the Red Eagle First Class.

At the outbreak of the war of 1806/07 he became the leader of a mixed Prussian-Saxon reserve division in the corps of Prince Hohenlohe . This corps of 8,000 soldiers and 24 guns also included five squadrons of his dragoon regiment. Because of “sickness and old age” - Prittwitz was already 75 years old - he soon had to return to the garrison . After the Peace of Tilsit he became inactive on half salary .

family

He married Margarethe Johanna Freiin von Schlichting on February 5, 1765 in Strehlen (* March 7, 1738 on Gut Kunow, Crossen district ; † June 28, 1811 in Lüben), the daughter of the Prussian major , district administrator and landowner Alexander Freiherr von Schlichting, Landlord at Gut Kunow, and Eva Beate von Maxen. The couple had the following children:
