Ernst Philipp Johann Lauda , from 1916 to 1919 Knight of Lauda , (born August 15, 1859 in Linz , Upper Austria ; † July 3, 1932 in Vienna ) was an Austrian hydraulic and bridge construction technician , top civil servant and advisor to Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Life

Lauda was born in 1859 as the son of Adolf Lauda , director of the Empress Elisabeth Railway , and Catharina Lauda, ​​b. Bogler, born in Linz . He attended the secondary school in Schottenfeld (Vienna), studied from 1876 to 1882 at the civil engineering school at the Technical University of Vienna and was there from 1881 to 1884 as an assistant for structural mechanics and bridge construction .

After completing his training, he embarked on a civil servant career with the state construction service, where he initially worked in a leading position in bridge construction (Danube bridge Stein-Mautern, reconstruction of the Vltava bridge at Bubna / Prague-Holeschowitz, bridging the Noce gorge from Santa Giustina in Trentino, etc. ) and drafted ministerial bridge building regulations. In 1895 Lauda was appointed director of the Central Hydrographic Office in Vienna. In this function, the organization of the hydrographic service in Austria, the establishment of a hydrometric research institute and the reorganization of the water level intelligence service took place under his leadership.

In 1909, Lauda changed as a ministerial advisor to the board of the hydraulic engineering section in the imperial Ministry of Public Works . There he led the development of the Austrian hydropower cadastre and the establishment of a state experimental institute for hydraulic engineering. In addition to river regulation measures, dams and port structures also fell within his area of ​​responsibility. Lauda was also the deputy chairman of the Danube Regulation Commission. As head of section in the Ministry of Public Works, Lauda was responsible for regulating the Danube at the turn of the century, after the “Land am Strom” had been hit by catastrophic floods almost every year up until then. For his services in particular to the regulation of the Danube in Vienna , Lauda was raised to the Austrian knighthood on May 28, 1916 by a handwriting from Emperor Franz Joseph I and was given a coat of arms . since the emperor died a few months later, the appropriate instrument was first of his successor Emperor Karl I signed.

From 1915 to 1916 Ritter von Lauda was President of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects, and from 1917 to 1918 he headed the building construction and reconstruction section in the Ministry of Public Works for the reconstruction of the areas destroyed by the war. From 1918 Ritter von Lauda was retired. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the family went to the nobility repeal Act 1919, the ennoblement lost.

From 1920 on, Lauda was an honorary lecturer in engineering at the Vienna University of Technology . He was a member of the advisory board of the Technical Research Office, was curator of the shipbuilding research institute and administrative council of the Danube Steamship Society and wrote important specialist articles on hydrography. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Ernst Ritter von Lauda was married to Maria Anna Theresia Kargl (* 1869) from 1890, the daughter of the Imperial and Royal Court Councilor Johann Kargl. He had four children with her: Maria Anna (* 1891), Ernst Adolf (1892–1963), Adolf Hans (* 1894) and Hans (1896–1974). Ernst Adolf was a well-known physician, Hans an important industrial manager. Through the latter, Ernst Ritter von Lauda was the great-grandfather of the entrepreneur and racing driver Niki Lauda (1949-2019).
