Ernst Leumann

Ernst Leumann (born April 11, 1859 in Berg , Switzerland ; † April 24, 1931 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Swiss Jainologist , a pioneer in the study of Jainism and the languages ​​of East Turkestan, whose work is still recognized today.

Career

Ernst Leumann studied linguistics in Zurich and Geneva and Sanskrit in Leipzig and Berlin . The doctorate took place in 1881 with the work "Etymological dictionary of the Sanskrit language" at the University of Strasbourg .

From 1882 to 1884 Leumann worked on the Sanskrit-English Dictionary in Oxford . In 1884 he worked as a cantonal school teacher in Frauenfeld . From 1884 he worked as a professor of Sanskrit at the University of Strasbourg , where he also served as dean from 1909 to 1910 . Here he participated in the Spahn case . After Strasbourg had become French again after the First World War, he became an honorary professor at the University of Freiburg in 1919 .
