Ernst Herbert Adolf Litter (born July 5, 1918 in Berlin , † December 27, 2006 in Essen ) was a German painter and graphic artist . His most famous works were created between the 1940s and 1960s . With around 600 designed film posters , he is one of the most productive poster graphic artists of his time.

life and work

Litter began an apprenticeship as a printer in 1933 . He then attended the Berlin School of Applied Arts and was a student of Jupp Wiertz . In 1946 he began to create posters, advertisements and catalogs for Schorcht-Film . He then worked for Herzog Film , Gloriafilm , Berliner Union-Film , Columbia Pictures , Constantin Film , Prisma Film and Matthias-Film . From the mid-1960s he only worked for Constantin and Atlas Film .

He received a special premium of 50 DM from Schorcht-Film for the poster Verdi - A Life in Melodies . This poster was later reproduced by Schorcht-Film using the gravure printing process . Litter's work was so valued that he was allowed to design and create freely without preliminary sketches. His work was directly accepted.

Litter enjoyed great freedom in designing his posters. The fact that he was completely free to design and did not have to have any poster sketches approved shows the great confidence he has in his work.

From the 1960s to 1980s he was an illustrator for advertising graphics in Düsseldorf.

Ernst Litter died on December 27, 2006 at the age of 88 in Essen
