Ernst Louis Kalkowsky (born September 9, 1851 in Tilsit , East Prussia, † February 13, 1938 in Dresden ) was a German geologist .

After graduating from high school in Tilsit in June 1870, Kalkowsky enrolled at the University of Leipzig on October 17, 1870 . In 1874 he received his doctorate from Ferdinand Zirkel in Leipzig with the thesis "Microscopic examinations of rockites and pitch stones of Saxony". The habilitation took place in Leipzig in 1878 with the thesis "The Gneiss formation of the Owl Mountains".

Kalkowsky followed a call to the chair of mineralogy and geology at the University of Jena in 1886 . In 1894 he was appointed professor for mineralogy and geology at the TH Dresden , succeeding Hanns Bruno Geinitz . In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1898 he succeeded Geinitz as head of the State Mineralogical-Geological Museum in Dresden .

In 1907 he was appointed Privy Councilor. He retired on October 1, 1919. In August 1912 he was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society . In November 1920, the Natural Science Society ISIS in Dresden made him an honorary member.
