Ernst Mattern (born May 1, 1890 in Königsberg ; † September 16, 1962 ) was a German officer , most recently major general in World War II .

Life

On December 28, 1903, at the age of 15, Mattern entered the Prussian Army's preschool in Bartenstein . On October 1, 1909, he joined the Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 5 . He took part in the First World War. It was passed on December 10, 1919. Farewell received the character or honorary rank of lieutenant . He became a police officer and served as a police officer until 1935. On October 1, 1935, he was accepted as a major in the Wehrmacht . On May 1, 1937 he was commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 28th Infantry Regiment. On September 1, 1937 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. At the beginning of the war he was still in command of the 2nd Battalion of the 28th Infantry Regiment. He then led two different battalions. On July 1, 1940, he was promoted to colonel . From November 1941 to March 1942 he was in command of the 208 infantry regiment. From November 1, 1943, Mattern was in command of the Warta camp military training area . He was promoted to major general on January 1, 1944. On November 1, 1944, he was appointed in command of the Poznan Fortress . On February 23, 1945, with the surrender of the last defenders, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets .
