Ludwig Ernst Georg Matthes (born August 8, 1889 in Marienburg (West Prussia) , † September 10, 1958 in Heidelberg ) was a German zoologist .

Life

Ernst Matthes graduated from high school and, after completing his doctorate and habilitation in 1927, accepted a professorship for zoology at the University of Greifswald as the successor to the zoologist Paul Buchner, who was appointed to Breslau in 1926 . At the same time he became director of the local zoological institute and museum and expanded the museum's exhibition collection. In particular, he produced large quantities of teaching materials for the students, including more than 2,000 microscopic slides on the comparative anatomy of vertebrates . During this time in 1936 the Hiddensee Biological Research Institute was included in the 'Greifswald - Rügen observer network for observing bird migration' which it set up. During his teaching activities, he was, among other things, the doctoral supervisor of Otto-Karl Trahms , who received his doctorate in 1936 with a dissertation on the subject of the olfactory organ of Pipa Americana .

In addition, he was a member of the board of the German Zoological Society (DZG) for several years as first vice-president from 1934 and as president from 1935 to 1936.

In 1936 he accepted the call of the Portuguese government to take over the chair of zoology at the renowned University of Coimbra and to found a zoological institute based on the German model. A short time later he founded the Museu e Laboratório Zoológico da Universidade de Coimbra . Kurt Heidermanns was his successor as director of the Zoological Institute and Museum in Greifswald , while Wilhelm Joseph Schmidt became President of the DZG.
