Ernst Julius Johann Franz Freiherr von Nadherny (born December 28, 1885 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † February 24, 1966 in Vienna, Austria ) was an Austrian actor and singer .

Life

Ernst Nadherny came from the younger line of the Austro-Bohemian Baron family Nádherný . His father Franz von Nadherny (1853-1919) was a councilor in the house, court and state archives in Vienna, the mother was Anna nee Habit (1881-1913). He received piano and singing lessons from childhood. After attending grammar school in his hometown, he studied law at the University of Vienna. In 1910 he married in Hamburg , Martha Merkel (1885–1940), who came from a merchant family in Munich. In the First World War he served in the Imperial and Royal Army and retired from active military service as a lieutenant in the artillery.

Against the wishes of his family, Nadherny began a professional career as a theater actor and operetta singer in the 1920s. He received his first film role at the age of 50 as a romantic lover in Beloved's Diary (director: Henry Koster ). In the same year he went on tour through Italy, where Goffredo Alessandrini noticed him and selected him for the role of an Austrian baron in his film Cavalleria . EW Emo hired him for his films Immortal Waltz and Vienna 1910 . In 1939 he got a role alongside Rudolf Wanka in the German film Linen from Ireland . After the annexation of Austria, Nadherny retired and went to Karlsbad , where he played at the municipal theater and took on guest roles at the Pilsen theater . His career was interrupted by a serious accident in Karlsbad, and his wife died a little later in Vienna. In 1941 he married Amalie, called Lia , Panholzer (1903–1966). Nadherny returned to Vienna in 1942 and took over the position of director at the Vienna Citizens' Theater. In 1953 Ernst Marischka brought him back to film, in 1954 he played a supporting role alongside Romy Schneider in the film Girl Years of a Queen . In the same year he received his most important film role in Luchino Visconti's Longing .

His son from his first marriage, Günther Nadherny (1916–1997), was the last male descendant of the younger line of the Nádherný family.
