Ernst Rülke (born November 15, 1896 in Leipzig , † February 9, 1964 in Bonn ) was a German wood sculptor and art teacher.

Life

In 1935, Rülke was appointed to teach sculpture at the Bad Warmbrunn wood carving school . He was the last principal of the school from April 1, 1944 until it was closed on March 1, 1946.

After his escape at the end of the Second World War , Rülke came to Stuttgart . There he taught initially as a private teacher and formed a circle of sculptors around him ("Ernst Rülke Sculpture Circle"). Soon he became a professor at the “Master School for Wood Sculptors” in Stuttgart, where he continued the tradition of the Silesian wood carving school Bad Warmbrunn. His students included Elsbeth Siebenbürger , Helmut Langhammer , Werner Striese and Astrid Haueisen-Oelssner .

When the Silesian poet Gerhart Hauptmann died in 1946, Rülke took the death mask from him, which can still be seen today in the “Gerhart Hauptmann House” in Kloster on Hiddensee . Rülke also created the bronze cast medal from 1946 "Gerhart Hauptmann on the death bed" (edition: 8 pieces). The reverse shows a mighty oak tree and the dates: 1862 = 1946.
