Ernst Rauch

Ernst Rauch (born October 18, 1797 in Darmstadt , † October 25, 1877 there ) was a German court engraver , steel engraver , illustrator and draftsman .

Life

Rauch received his first training from the engraver Ludwig Portmann. He was the brother and teacher of Karl Rauch . He traveled to Switzerland for a while. During his stay in Switzerland he made a large number of sheets in Aquatiuta, which were published by Lamy in Basel and Bern. Smaller works followed in Darmstadt, such as the portrait of the poet Goeckingk based on Anton Graff's model or a shepherd boy based on a painting by Antonio da Correggio . From 1822 to 1823 he stayed in Paris to study at Louis Hersent's school . Here an engraving of the interior of St. Paul's Church in Rome was made based on a drawing by G. Lerch. In 1827 he was appointed court copper engraver in Darmstadt. Rauch also worked as a drawing teacher at the Grand Ducal Gymnasium in Darmstadt.
