Ernst Siegfried Koepke

Ernst Siegfried Köpke (born December 8, 1813 in Berlin ; † March 19, 1883 ) was a German high school teacher and classical philologist.

origin

His parents were the educator and philologist Gustav Köpke (* October 4, 1773, † June 28, 1837) and his wife Henriette Rohleder († January 9, 1835). His sister Emilie Antigone (born May 26, 1803; † January 10, 1871) was married to Leopold von Caprivi (1797-1865).

Life

He attended the grammar school at the Gray Monastery , which his father ran, where he graduated from high school as a Primus Omnium . He studied philology at the universities of Bonn and Berlin . In 1833 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . He received his doctorate in 1836 with the dissertation De Ionis Chii poetea vita etc fragmentis for Dr. phil., then in 1837 first assistant teacher at the Gray Monastery but then in 1838 professor at Friedrichswerder Gymnasium , where he stayed for 15 years. From 1850 to 1853 he was the teacher of the princesses Anna and Luise , the daughters of Carl von Prussia .

On October 21, 1856 he was appointed director of the Knight Academy in Brandenburg Cathedral . Köpke wrote numerous publications mostly on philological topics. He was canon of the Protestant cathedral monastery in Brandenburg an der Havel .

Köpke married Ida Bernheim (* July 31, 1816 - † October 19, 1875). The couple had several children including:

  • Ernst Gustav Martin (February 19, 1845 - November 30, 1918), General of the Infantry ∞ Margarete Auguste Gerlich (July 14, 1853 - October 16, 1897)
  • Reinhold (* July 18, 1839; † December 16, 1915)
