Ernst Wagner (glass manufacturer)

Ernst Wagner (born October 12, 1836 in Trier , † August 2, 1902 in Bonn ) was a German glass manufacturer and local politician . He was an honorary citizen of the city of Saarbrücken-Sankt-Johann .

Life

Around 1860 he moved from Trier to the Saar district . In 1862 he became a partner in the Mariannenthaler Glashütte in Schnappach bei Sulzbach (founded 1784) and Luisenthal (Völklingen) (built 1857). In 1865 he married Maria Carolina (* 1843), daughter of the glassworks owner Christian Adolph Wagner (1801–1874), the identity of the names was a coincidence. After the death of his father-in-law he took over the management full-time. From 1894 he spent his retirement in Bonn .

Public offices

From 1874 to 1883 Wagner was a member of the first established Chamber of Commerce , and from 1886–1893 a member of the Saarbrücken Chamber of Commerce , which was newly founded in 1886 . In 1888 the members elected him deputy chamber president. From 1877 to 1893 Ernst Wagner was a member of the Sankt Johann city council, his election as third alderman took place on February 6, 1879. This was followed by his election as second alderman on April 24, 1887 and on September 15, 1887 as first alderman of the city of Sankt Johann . From 1882 to 1901 he was the second chairman of the "Association for the Protection of the Common Economic Interests of Saar Industry".

Social

He is credited with founding a pension fund for invalids, widows and orphans for his glassworks in 1866, as well as establishing a workers' consumer association in 1877 .

  • The Ernst-Wagner-Weg , located in today's Saarbrücken district of Sankt Johann, was named after him
