Johann Ludwig Wagner (born August 17, 1789 in Friedrichsthal (Saar) , † April 1, 1871 in Saarbrücken ) was a German merchant , landowner and mayor of old Saarbrücken .

Life

His mother was the Friedrichsthalerin Maria Sophia Katharina Wagner (1772–1803), b. Eberhardt. His father, the Dirmingen- born glass manufacturer Johann Philipp Wagner (1766–1839). Together with his brother-in-law Carl Philipp Vopelius and his partner Leonhard Reppert, the father ran the Mariannenthaler Glashütte in nearby Schnappach from 1797 . Ludwig continued his father's business. He also managed an estate . On June 6, 1832, he married the daughter Henriette Dorothea of ​​the wholesale merchant Heinrich Jakob Schmidtborn.

Public offices

Ludwig Wagner was already retired and had planned to retire from his life as a landowner when the Saarbrücken city administration ran into personnel difficulties due to the sudden death of his predecessor Friedrich Haldy . At the age of 55, he accepted his appointment as acting mayor on September 28, 1844 . His official assignment took place on October 16, 1844. Since February 26, 1846 he was an elected member of the district council . On March 11, 1850, the Prussian municipal code was introduced , which replaced the previous municipal code for the Rhine Province . Thus Saarbrücken was also entitled to the independent administration of community affairs under the statutory supervision of the state - this included the office of an elected mayor. Wagner stood for election on September 16, 1850, and his election was confirmed on May 24, 1851. After his first term of office he was re-elected on September 14, 1853. However, Wagner only worked as mayor until October 27, 1854, when, at the age of 65, he left office prematurely at his own request.
