Karl Zimmermann (born May 19, 1770 in Altwiller ; born Karl Ludwig Alexander Zimmermann ; † September 17, 1835 in Alt-Saarbrücken ) was a Reformed superintendent , educator and mayor of Alt-Saarbrücken (1815-1816).

Origin and life

Altwiller (dt. Altweiler ) in Alsace near Saverne belonged to the Upper Office of Harskirchen in Nassau-Saarbrücken . Karl was born the son of the reformed pastor Johann Philipp Zimmermann (1736–1801), his mother was Anna Philippine nee. Balbier (1741-1815). After moving to Saarbrücken in 1807, he married Sophie Maria, daughter of the princely barracks Christian Schmidt and his wife Sophie Louise, née. Fracture. Together they had a son named Karl (1810-1896).

Work as a pastor and teacher

From 1801 to 1817 Karl Zimmermann was pastor of the Reformed parish in Saarbrücken. At the same time, in 1804 he took a position as 3rd teacher at the Saarbrücken grammar school . From 1808 to 1834 he was rector there, at the time he still ran the school based on the French model as an école secondaire , in 1814 as a college and only from 1815 as a Prussian grammar school again . From 1805 to 1817 the Reformed Consistory Saarbrücken elected him consistorial president. He was instrumental in the introduction of the Saarbrücker Union on October 24, 1817. From 1817 to 1835 Zimmermann again held the office of pastor in Saarbrücken, until 1833 as superintendent of the Saarbrücken Synod , alternating every year , then as sole superintendent until his death.

Public offices

After the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna up to June 9, 1815, France's influence was again reduced to the borders of 1790, and Saarbrücken , which had previously been under French control, finally fell to Prussia. The last French mayor, Charles Rupied, acknowledged this development on July 12, 1815 by resigning from office. On July 23, 1815, Zimmermann was appointed Lord Mayor of Saarbrücken by Councilor Schnetzler, extraordinary commissioner of the governor general of the Russian army of occupation. Already in September 1816 Zimmermann renounced in favor of his successor Johann Friedrich Köllner .
